BioSummer is a year-round program that provides a two-week immersion program in biotechnology for 320 North Carolina rising eighth grade middle school and 98 rising eleventh and twelfth grade high school students. The program takes place at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and at biotechnology companies in the Research Triangle Park. Expansion sites will be anchored at East Carolina University and Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center to reach students. From the classroom to the boardroom to the laboratory, this hands-on, interactive program introduces students to the exciting world of biotechnology in an entrepreneurial context. Led by certified teachers, university faculty, renowned scientists, and biotech executives, minority and socio-economically disadvantaged high school and middle school students gain hands-on exposure to molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics; state-of-the-art techniques and instrumentation; bioethics and business ethics; entrepreneurship and business development skills; leadership; and team building. Students will expand their summer experiences during the school year through Saturday programs and mentorships at local biotechnology companies.
